What are the Top Selling Vehicles of All Time

As you would expect the Toyota Corolla is at the top of this list with well over 50 Million Corolla’s sold throughout the world since it first appeared back in 1966. It has gone through 12 different generations up until today’s model. Even more impressive is that the Corolla became the world’s best-selling car by 1974, that’s just 8 years after it first went on sale to car buyers in almost every part of the world.

Toyota Corolla 1966The Corolla was quick to become the most popular vehicle of all time because of its unwavering reliability and affordability. The Corolla was the vehicle you could rely on and continues that tradition up to present times. Corolla’s reliability rating stands at 4.5 out of 5.0 and is ranked 1st out of 36 other competing compact cars.

From Toyota’s zero defects build quality to its safety ratings, the Corolla continues to impress with its safety scores and technology. In addition, the Corolla is widely recognized in the community as the pioneer in automotive safety. Another huge factor why the Corolla keeps selling is its affordability, which is perfect for drivers who just want a regular vehicle.

However, with SUV, truck and crossover sales eating huge chunks of market share and the declining popularity of sedans, it might be a matter of time before the Corolla drops the top spot.

Ford F-150 1948Coming in second place is the Ford F Series with over 43 Million units sold. It’s America’s best-selling vehicle, so it’s no wonder it’s in the top 5 list of all time. The Ford F150 was introduced in 1948 and has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States and remains popular in 2024.

Over the 75 years it has been around there have been many different variants and upgrades but buyers have come to know and trust what they are getting and so it continues to hold that best-selling spot.

The F-150 pickup truck is known for its tough ruggedness and according to Ford, there are more F Series trucks still on the road that have clocked up 400,000K’s or more than any other brand. In addition, Ford have worked on improving the fuel economy with a number of changes to weight and a more efficient and lighter engine.

What about third place? Well you may be surprised to know that the Volkswagen Golf holds that spot with over 35.5 Million cars sold throughout the world.

VW Golf 1974Volkswagen is an iconic brand that made some of the most popular cars ever sold, including the VW Beetle. While it’s not as popular in the US, the Volkswagen Golf is the best-selling car in Europe, selling an amazing 205,408 units in 2021. The VW Golf has held the top spot since 2008, showing no signs of slowing down.

The first series 1 VW Golf was produced at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg in March 1974. The official market launch started in May that same year. Prior to this, the VW Beetle with its rear-mounted air-cooled engine and rear-wheel drive had shaped the Volkswagen brand for decades.

There are many reasons why the Golf became an icon and so popular. For instance, it was seen as a car for people to love, enjoy and be proud to own. The VW Golf is still the benchmark for hot hatches and offers the perfect mix of fun, practicality, cool to drive and affordable to buy.
